Nutrition and Food Security

Fish is the lead provider of animal protein and essential micronutrients to Myanmar consumers. Amid a rapid decline of wild fish stock in coastal areas surrounding the country, aquaculture products bear huge potential to improve the nutrition status among people living in remote rural areas, where malnutrition is currently the most prevalent.

Through nutrition education campaigns and improved value chain links, MYSAP works to raise fish sales particularly among poor and the most vulnerable population groups in fish deficit areas. The programme is encouraging a shift towards a higher share of aquaculture production relative to capture fisheries, while also promoting fish consumption as an animal protein source that is much more environmentally and climate-friendly than other livestock.
